BARELY more than a month since the MT Solar 1 tanker sank and scattered bunker fuel in the waters of Guimaras, there are still 44 families in Nueva Valencia in an evacuation center.

Earlier, Petron Company, who hired the tanker to transport its oil, said most of the affected villages in Nueva Valencia are already clean and free of the sludge.

One of those still in the evacuation center is Pructosa Gratique, who lives in a tent with her five siblings. She said their way of living has changed and that their livelihood was affected despite the relief goods and other assistance that Petron and the local government gave.

“We don’t know when we will go back to our house and our new life,” she said.

Eleoderio Aying, Petron team leader assigned in Tando, said the Cash for Work program is ongoing. He said 18 workers are now receiving P300 a day through this.
