ILOILO CITY—Experts at a scientific conference here recommended further studies, costing millions of pesos, and monitoring on the Petron oil spill in Guimaras.

Glenn Aguilar, University of the Philippines in the Visayas chancellor and head of the technical and scientific advisory group of the Task Force Guimaras, said at least P50 million will be needed for research and monitoring of the spill’s effects in the next 10 years.

Aguilar said further research work was needed because the studies made on the oil spill were done rapidly with limited resources and the long-term effects on marine resources and the community are still unknown.

The participants said that while initial studies showed varying impacts and levels of damage to marine resources, there is a pressing need to provide resources, personnel and equipment to undertake more studies because of the lack of previous knowledge of oil spills in tropical countries like the Philippines.

At least 101 participants discussed the spill’s effects.
