Fish from Panay Gulf, Guimaras Strait free from bunker fuel

December 11, 2006

FISH caught from the Guimaras Strait and Panay Gulf and sold in Guimaras and Iloilo are free from bunker oil, according to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).

BFAR’s fish analysis made after the oil spill was shown during the recent visit of Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Angelo Reyes.

BFAR also showed that there were 100 hectares of corals affected by the oil spill caused by the sinking of MT Solar 1, while there were 20 hectares of sea grass near the shallow waters of Taklong-Tando Islands that were damaged. Some areas showed “negative mortality.”

MT Solar I, an oil tanker contracted by Petron Corp., sank last August 11 and was carrying at least 2 million liters of bunker fuel. (SunStar Iloilo, Dec. 11, 2006)
